Lab 10

I decided to use health insurance data along with person who had college degrees. I wanted to see if there was any correlation between higher education and the likelihood of having health insurance. The result appears to be that the number of uninsured does not seem to have a relationship with college education. It seems that both are higher in high population areas.

Nice Color Scheme

This map's color scheme works very well. The colors are clearly differentiated and work well with the background color.

Here is my color choropleth map of the U.S. I noticed several differences between my print copy and my digital image. The color appeared quite a bit darker in print, which you can especially see in the dark green and the background color. One think I like about the print copy is that the state boundaries are much more defined. All of the lines are less pixelated in the print copy and the black stands out much more boldly than they appear on screen.

New Map

This is an interesting map because it gives the exact value next to the proportional symbol representation. I think that even though the exact values are shown, a key that said blue is increase and red is decrease in net population would be helpful. Also, an inset showing where this region lies on the state of New York would be a nice addition as well.

Choropleth Map

Here is a choropleth map of Missouri that shows the percent of the total state economy that each county accounts for. The colors are very distinct and it is easy to see where the bulk of the economic activity takes place.

Dot Density Map

Here is a dot sensity map of township population of a selected slice of Ohio. It appears to be GIS generated and gives you a really good idea of the population density.

I found this map of Virginia battlefields from 1891. It was created by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway company, perhaps to encourage people to take tourist trips on the railway. It seems that a lot of battles took place near railways. I wonder if this is because they were battles over control of the railroad or if they simply took place there because there are many towns near railroads.

Sweet Sites

Here are some way cool links I found for our class!!!

National Atlas
On this site you can make maps with many different layer options. They are printable but you can't extract the data to use on your own.

Virginia GIS Data
Here you can download Virginia boundary information and road networks as shape files.

Census Boundary Data
At the census bureau site you can get county boundary information for the whole country.
